Sony
Plaintiff’s Claim v. Sony Corporation
A class action was brought against Sony Corporation for sale of defective DVD players. Brand models included the S330, S360, S530D, S550D, S560D and S570D. Consumers complained that the DVD player malfunctions after the expiry of the warranty period. Often the screen froze and a “no disc” error was displayed and the DVD player simply refused to function.
A class action was also brought against Sony of Canada Ltd. with respect to the sale of the Sony Playstation 2. The Sony Playstation 2, which was rushed into production, experienced severe difficulties and there were numerous consumer complaints about this product. Many of these complaints occurred beyond the warranty period. There was an inherent defect which caused the screen to “freeze”, the reading of a “no disc” error message and finally, the collapse of the system. It was alleged Sony of Canada Ltd. refused to honour its obligations beyond the warranty period, notwithstanding these defects.
These actions have now been settled.
